I visited my family last month and did some fabric shopping in south korea.
So I would like to share some good shopping places for my sewing friends.
It is a shame we can’t travel as easy as before since coivd but when things are easier , I highly recommend visiting south korea and stopping by these cool places for your next sewing project.
First I am going to talk about Dong Dae moon market. It is a huge fashion industry place for both wholesalers and retailers.
You can also shop for clothes and any kind of fashion items but there is also a huge fabric and sewing material shopping center.
Its called DongDaemun shopping complex.
You get there by subway. It is on line 1 and line 4.get out at dongdaemun station.
And find exit 9. The huge fabric & sewing material market is connected to the exit.
There are A, B, C, and D . It is all connected.
You don’t need to get out of building A to go to B.
There are doors between the connected buildings, so you can easily walk around.
But as i said, it is huge. Don’t worry about losing your way, just enjoy.
Every floor has a different concept and items per building.
You can find all kinds of fabrics and fabric trends here.
But you cannot just pick up these fabric swatches. They are more for the wholesaler.
Yes. It is sad. This place is more for wholesalers. not students or individual sewers.
Some shops are ok for retailers; however even though you can buy the fabric, the fabric won’t be ready on that day since their storage is somewhere else. That is why they only keep the fabric swatches in their small tiny shops.
Don’t be sad. I will still have one more place to show you. You can do fabric shopping here freely.
Anyway this place is still cool to see and you will get some ideas.
Once more , this kind of place will have a lot of sewing pens, chocks, rullers, and needles from Japan and korea. Please get some things here because it is so cheap and you sometimes find a good deal.
Now I'm moving to another market. Its called Gwangjang market.
It is another huge traditional local market in seoul. Older than dongdaemun market. But today, I am only talking about the fabric market so let’s keep focused.
It is on line 5. Jongro 5ga, exit 11.
This market is more friendly for retailers and students. They sell a lot of different kinds of deadstock.
Per fabric, they hold around 3 yds minimum. So it is quite enough for someone like me for one sewing project. You can find deadstock, designer fabric and really good quality wools. Also the price is super reasonable which is my other fav part about here.
I have made a vid for my fabric shopping in south korea. please check it out if you are interested.
These are huge places and you might want to spend a full day there if you are a sewing lover like me. I got some fabrics and some materials while i was there. if i have a chance i will share my shopping list. I hope the pandemic is over soon so everyone can travel around as before and if you have a chance , please check out these places.
