The Shirring & Smocking techniques have always been on my sewing to-do list, but I was never able to try until I had this specific design idea.
First, I wanted to make a round neck instead of a square neck, but I couldn’t find any similar tutorials that I could refer to.
I measured several t- shirts and made a pattern.
Based on that, I cut two big squares for the front & back parts and shirred.
After shirring my prefered length, I copied the pattern on the shirred panels and cut it out.
I was scared to cut it out because if I miscalculated the pattern, I would have not been able to use the shirred fabric again. Well, sometimes, you just need to follow your heart.
So I did (what a brave thing) and luckily, It was all good.
I stitched the side seams and the shoulder first. Then checked the fit and the neckline again.
I amended the shoulder length and made a deeper neckline.
Once I decided the fit, I assembled the sleeves. and it came out just so perfect, just how I designed it.
To be honest, I wanted to make a dress at first but I used all my 50yds of elastic threads and I had to make a top instead.
Which was fine at this moment because my hands were tired after doing a lot of shirring.
I referred to and recreated the sleeve pattern of the #simplicity8839#S8839.
Reg the blue smocking stitches, I stitched them before shirring and made the shirring on the stitches. I had to do some tests to finalize the size and design.
I would use a thicker thread (like a top stitch thread) next time if I do the technique again.
Since I made a top I had some leftover fabrics, so I made a shirt for my friend. I will keep you posted soon. Stay Tuned!
