How To Insert Godet Into A Skirt/a Slash

This week, I would like to share a new technique i have tried.

It is not a tutorial because it was my first time to try as well. So you will see I made a lot of mistakes and things like that.

I was not planning it when I started this shirt dress, but

I was like I guess I could do something more fun at the hem and I just decided to add these!

So I made the dress with the Vogue 9345 pattern. if you are my follower, you will notice that I have just made a dress with the pattern.

Anyway, I made the dress and have not finished the hems here and there. then I decided adding the godets.

I have shortened the length. besides that, I used the pattern as is.

First, This is the fabric I used. It is a shirting fabric.

52% Polyester, 48% Cotton and 145cm wide.

This fabric is a joy to work with, I highly recommend it. It’s wonderfully lightweight but it’s not transparent and doesn't require a lining.

(This was offered in exchanged to post a review)

I made a sample first. Because I was not sure what it would look like and the size on the dress. also I had to understand how to sew this one.

I pick up one paper. and draw a 20cm square.

and then draw a curved line to connect the two ends, so it looks like you have a quarter of a pie. It includes a half cm seam allowance.

and then Cut it out.

now, repeat as before. but I made 11cm.

After that, Fold it in half for both.

and I cut the fabric with this size. so It looks like a slice of pizza. same for the small one.

One godet will have 4 pcs of big ones and 6 pcs of small ones. I will call them one group.

Now I have cut 6 groups of them.

All I need to do is connect them to the sides.

Before stitching them together, I overlock the side seams of each panel first.

I cut where I marked my six lines. I have six cuts that are each 20cm long.

2 lines out of 6 lines will be from the side seams.

Here is the lesson. I should have made a quarter of one godet. It would be much easier to assemble. Especially when there is no seam allowance to add the pcs.

The 180 degree will make it bulky but it is so difficult to sew together.

Here, I press them nicely and it is all done.

It gives a lot of fullness and becomes a very unique shirt dress. It could be a simple shirt dress but these totally change the look. It fits through the body and flaring out at the hem for a feminine silhouette.

I made some mistakes here and there since it was my first time. but It was a truly fun skill to learn and I would do it again.

but next time, as i said, I would make a quarter pie shaped or triangle godets to make my life easier.

Happy sewing to all!
