I always wanted to have an organza dress and finally made this beautiful puffy dress for this summer.
I couldn't decide the dress design for long time. The fabric itself is dramatic already so I had to carefully design something feminine and casual, not too loud.
Fabric
I found this beautiful flowery organza fabric in a local market in South korea last year. I bought 1.5 meters of it and used it all for a dress for my size , XS.
I actually wanted to make a midi dress but the fabric was a bit pricey so I ended up with a mini dress.
It was my first time to use organza fabric. It is not silky as silk or soft polyester but still difficult to treat since it is a very light , sheer fabric.
Sewing Pattern
This dress pattern is from Friday Patterns. Its called "the wilder gown'
It is super easy to sew and beginner friendly.
I have used this pattern a lot and my first commercial sewing pattern was this one as well.
I didn't hack / amend the pattern this time. But I added the frills at the sleeve hem & between the skirt & top panel.
Lining
This is a sheer fabric so I had to make an inner dress separately instead of adding a lining.
I used OJAYROOM 's dress pattern to make the inner dress.
Sewing
Assembling the pattern was not difficult at all. As i said, Sewing beginners can make this dress I think. But I wanted to finish the seam in a very fancy way since it shows everything.
I finished the seam with Kkaekki which we use for making a hanbok, a Korean traditional dress.
This is a very elaborate seam finishing Technic which requires a lot of attention.
I will make a long story short about the Kkaekki Technic.
Stitch 0.5~0.8mm from the seam allowance
Fold the stitch line and press
Stitch 0.2 mm from the stitch line while it is pressed
Trim the Seam allowance.
Fold and Press the stitch line
Stitch again while it is pressed. It will be 0.1~0.2mm width.
Here I am done with my summer dress.
The dress silhouette & the fabric textile make the dress very lovely & cute Just like I dreamed about.
This can go with both punky or trendy boots or sandals like with a causal summer vibe.
Who can say no to opulent organza?
My wardrobe is full of romantic impressions now.
