After making a crop jacket with Vogue 7975 last time , I really wanted to add a tweed jacket to my wardrobe. It also would be much nicer if it was a high quality, hand made tweed jacket that will be tailored just for myself. Let's get right into my sewing journey.
Pattern
I made an autumn jacket with this pattern last time. This is very easy to sew. Once more, it is a classic design which is perfect for making a tweed jacket. The body pattern is a princess line from the shoulder. this means it is fitted and it will be challenging to use a patterned fabric like me since there will be more cutting lines that you would need to match with a patterned fabric. The sewing process is easy and simple for a jacket since there are no collars or so. If this was your first time to make a lined jacket , this pattern would be a good place to start.
Fabric
This wool blended fabric is super chic and elegant. It has glitter yarn inside the black yarn that gives it a little bit of character beyond the classic black & white tweed fabric. The front(right side) is woven weaved and the back (wrong side) is brushed. This is very thick fabric which will be perfect a blazer or a coat for a brisk day.
Amendment
I shortened the length 5 cm. Cropped jackets are trendy, but i did not do it only because of that. This classic jacket length with a princess line can give a very elegant vibe with the white & black tweed fabric. I wanted to shorten the length to give it a fresh look. I shortened it up to around the upper hips.
First Try
I really had a bit of fun making the fringe for the jacket trim. I cut the fabric in bias around 3 cm width and made a chain stitch with the white yarn to add at the middle of the trim. When it is ready, place the white chain at the middle of the tape and straight stitch them together and then remove the threads up to the stitched line. I finished the jacket with lining and afterwards I was going to stitch the trim on it, but the seams were so thick that my sewing machine could not handle it at all. so I had to hand stitch it around the jacket edges.
No top stitch patch pockets - It was my first time to try and it was super difficult since the pocket sizes were way too small to do this. Plus the fabric thickness didn't make it easy. the wool fabric didn't help the stitch line to remain nice and neat, so I had to stitch the pocket placement line by hand first and then add the patch pocket based on the stitch line. I think it worked well.
Final
The pattern is simple and easy to sew but if you need to match the patterned fabric , There will be some challenges. This tweed fabric is timeless and classic which will make it highly versatile. If i had more of this, I would make a matching trouser or skirt & a hat. I am in love with this pattern, next time I would like to find yellow/ green mixed tweed fabric to make a spring jacket and other matching items. This fabric is warm and soft to keep me very comfortable while in the brisk autumn weather.
