Make your own Corduroy Autumn Jacket

My favorite but most demanding customer. My husband. When the Autumn breeze has started, he looked for an autumn jacket here and there but complained about the things he found, like their colors, designs, etc. Then he started looking for a sewing pattern & fabric that maybe i could make for him. well, This is how I started sewing the jacket.

Let's started the sewing review.

Fabric

This is 100% cotton corduroy fabric. I bought it from the local store, Franklins. He actually wanted a military / army green color of twill fabric but we couldn't find it so we had to change our design and got this one. I decided not to add a lining and bought a bit more than the pattern suggested since he wanted the length longer.

Expect fabric dust when you cut corduroy, this was super easy to treat and sew. however, It can be really thick in some parts so it is better to be careful to not to break the needle!

Pattern

I used #Simplicity8845 #S8845 #Mimigstyle. His size is XL and the pattern and the sewing wasn't that difficult. Plus, you can find the whole sewing process of the pattern on youtube so that was nice to cross check. However, I had to sew a flat felled seam since i didn't add a lining. It was bit tough as the fabric has a bit of thickness. It normally works fine when i have 1.5cm seam allowance but I will give more loss next time if i use a denim or corduroy kind of fabric.

Amendment
  • He has a long waist, but the jacket length was bit short. Maybe it is because the pattern is unisex and a denim jacket design. so the length might be designed for the waist line above the hip. but he really wanted the length at the middle of hip so I increased the length by about 10cm. The pattern doesn't indicate the lengthen line, so i had to adjust it by myself.

  • I increased the pocket opening to 15cm. It was smaller than that and i think that is a bit small for his hands. Is that only my concern?

First Try,
  • I have never used the jean snaps before. This made me so nervous when i started hammering but it was actually much easier than i expected. I bought some from Ebay but it didn't work well so I had to buy Pyrm 17mm snaps again.

  • I only did a single welt pocket once a long time ago when i was in uni. I was scared to cut the pocket opening just in case i made any mistake since i can't do anything on the body parts after cutting it, but i managed it just fine!

Next time,
  • It would have been nice if the pocket lining width went to the side seam instead of finishing at the middle. Next time, I will make the pocket lining bigger.

  • I followed the seam finish as indicated but It wasn't easy for me and it wasn't nice and neat. I will study more and would change the way of finishing next time.

My review,

I will use the pattern again since he still talks about Army green twill fabric. and I will add lining next time so i don't need to deal with flat felled seams.

The length I amended is perfect for him and other fits are so nice he loves the jacket a lot. It is just perfect for UK autumn.
